Moving Up Without Sucking Up

I will shine a new light on the corporate experience and offer some tips, tricks and techniques that have come from my many years of working in Human Resources.

My Journey

Shelley has worked in both Toronto and Montreal for large multi-national organizations. In her last executive role, Shelley led the HR function, in a global healthcare organization, to become a top employer of choice in Canada. Throughout her 30-year career, Shelley has gained valuable Human Resources experience in organization development, employee relations, training & development, and HR best practices. In 2007, Shelley started her own outsourced HR firm. Shelley successfully grew the firm to a team of 25 HR professionals and expanded the HR service offering until the practice was successfully sold/acquired in 2019.

She was granted the Human Resources Professional Association Fellow Award and was named as one of Canada’s Distinctive Women. As a highly sought after speaker, she shares her insights and experience with professional associations and corporations across the country.

Currently, she focuses on leadership development, coaching, and corporate speaking engagements.  She is also finishing her book entitled “Moving Up Without Sucking Up”.

Shelley graduated from York University in Toronto with a B.A. in Psychology and completed the Advanced HR Management Program from the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto) as well as the Wharton Business Leadership Program at the Wharton School of Business in Pennsylvania.  She is also a professional coach with the Coaches Training Institute and achieved her Certified Human Resources Executive designation with the HR Professional Association of Canada.

How to move ahead in the corporate world without compromising your personal values. (Coming Soon)

Moving Up Without Sucking Up

I will shine a new light on the corporate experience and offer some tips, tricks and techniques that have come from my many years of working in Human Resources.  I worked my way up through corporate world from an HR Assistant to a Vice President of HR for a large multinational organization.  I stepped into the Vice President role at 34 years old and stayed there for 8 years.  While I was there, this organization became a top employer and continued to be voted a top employer for many years.

During my career, I have seen “the bad, the good and the great”.  I have seen amazing employees and those who failed; I have seen great managers and I have seen terrible managers.  I have seen what works and what doesn’t work.   I have been involved in the “talent discussions” at a number of organizations – I know what gets rewarded and promoted and what just doesn’t work.

Chapters include:

  • The Importance of Self-Awareness
  • Creating Your Personal Brand
  • It’s All About Attitude
  • Getting Clear About Your Career Aspirations
  • Networking is Critical
  • Be Real – Be Genuine – Be Yourself
  • Showing Your Commitment
  • Professionalism, Preparedness & Kick Ass Presentations
  • Beware of the Political Environment
  • Managing Your Boss
  • Becoming a High Potential

I have had the pleasure of attending many of Shelley’s speaker events and each one has left a lasting impression on me.  Shelley has the ability to own the room  and engage with the audience as if she were speaking directly to you. Finding a better presenter for your event would be a hard task indeed!

Denise

Shelley was a guest speaker at our organization on the topic of Networking and Career Advancement (based on two chapters from her upcoming book). It was very motivational and was a great way to kick off our internal learning curriculum.

Ben

I really enjoyed the Management Foundations training that you did, you are a real pro!  I am super impressed by your time control and how you got all of us engaged.  It is a bit of an art and a science and I think you did a wonderful job, I learned a lot and I really appreciate you!  Thank you so much.

Geordan

Shelley was phenomenal! It really showed that she did her homework, that she challenged me and persuaded me to take a different route, that seems to be a better fit. Shelley was worth every penny for the support I received.

Sylvia

I think you left us each feeling like the book we really enjoyed reading was done and how one sits there for a bit just still thinking and experiencing what we just read.
